“Education website” covers very different projects. A primary school needs news, term dates and a contact page. A university department needs program pages and staff profiles. A teacher selling video courses needs lessons, quizzes, payments and student accounts. No single theme is best for all three.
So this list is organized by use case. It includes four themes from WordPress.org and five from Shtheme. Disclosure: Larna, Educad, Elms, Eudaimonia and UDEMA are made by Shtheme, the publisher of this blog. For every theme we list what it is built for, how you edit it, the last update date shown by its source on 2 October 2026, and what to check before choosing.
First decide: do you need an LMS?
A theme controls how your site looks. Selling and delivering courses (lessons, progress tracking, quizzes, certificates, payments) is the job of a learning management system (LMS) plugin. Most course sites pair a theme with an LMS plugin.
Four LMS plugins we checked on WordPress.org:
| Plugin | Version and last check | Free version includes | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tutor LMS | 4.1.0, tested up to WordPress 7.1.2 | Course builder, quizzes, assignments, built-in payments with several gateways | Paid add-ons for certificates, content drip and more |
| LearnPress | 4.4.9.1, tested up to 7.1.2 | Courses, lessons, quizzes; sell through PayPal or WooCommerce | 70,000+ active installations |
| LifterLMS | 10.2.1, tested up to 7.1.2 | Course builder, progress tracking, certificates, Stripe and PayPal | Paid add-ons and bundles |
| Sensei LMS | 4.26.4, requires WordPress 6.9 | Courses and quizzes in the block editor, “Learning Mode” | Built by Automattic |
If you only need information pages (programs, staff, admissions, news), skip the LMS and choose a theme with good page templates instead.

For selling online courses
TutorStarter – designed around Tutor LMS
TutorStarter is a free theme from Themeum, the makers of Tutor LMS. Its directory page describes it as an LMS theme designed for Tutor LMS, compatible with Elementor and the block editor, with three pre-built home layouts.
- Good fit if: you have chosen Tutor LMS and want a theme designed for its pages.
- Check before choosing: it makes most sense with Tutor LMS; with another LMS plugin, a general theme may serve you better.
- Facts: version 4.0.3, updated 26 August 2026, 10,000+ active installations, requires PHP 7.4 (WordPress.org).
Larna (Shtheme) – a free theme for online academies
Larna is a free Elementor theme for online courses, workshops, schools and training providers. Its listing mentions five homepage versions and one-click demo import, and it was the most recently updated of our education themes when we checked.
- Good fit if: you want a ready-made academy look and plan to add an LMS plugin for the actual courses.
- Check before choosing: the product page doesn’t name a specific LMS plugin, so test your chosen LMS with the theme on a staging site before you build course pages.
- Facts: costs $0, with installation and six months of support available as a paid add-on; last update 16 September 2026; the product page lists Elementor, Contact Form 7 and WooCommerce as compatible. View Larna · Live demo
Educad (Shtheme) – for course catalogs and exam preparation
Educad is a free theme aimed at online learning, teaching and exam websites. Its preview advertises three home pages and 18 inner pages, which covers course listings, instructors and pricing without much extra design work.
- Good fit if: you need a course catalog look on a small budget.
- Check before choosing: as with Larna, pair it with an LMS plugin and test them together.
- Facts: $0 on its product page; updated 16 June 2026; Elementor layouts and one-click demo data included. View Educad · Live demo
Kadence – a flexible base for any LMS
Kadence isn’t an education theme, but its directory description mentions integrations for course sites, and it is a common base for LMS plugins. Choose it if you prefer to design your own pages with blocks and keep the theme neutral.
- Good fit if: you want flexibility more than a ready-made education design.
- Check before choosing: you will design the homepage and course pages yourself or from templates.
- Facts: 500,000+ active installations and version 1.5.2 from 24 July 2026, according to its directory page.
Course – a block theme for Sensei LMS
Course is a free block theme by Automattic, built to work with Sensei LMS and usable without it.
- Good fit if: you want to build everything in the Site Editor and use Sensei LMS.
- Check before choosing: the directory shows its last update on 12 September 2024, much older than everything else here. Test it carefully with the current WordPress version, or use it as a starting point for your own block theme.
- Facts: version 1.3.9, 900+ active installations, requires WordPress 6.3 (WordPress.org).
For schools, colleges and universities
Eudaimonia (Shtheme) – for universities and colleges
Eudaimonia is a paid Elementor theme for universities, colleges and learning centers, according to its product page. The preview mentions three hero variations and more than 18 inner pages: useful for program pages, campus information and events.
- Good fit if: your site is mostly program and admissions information rather than paid courses.
- Check before choosing: institutional sites usually need strong accessibility; check heading structure and color contrast once you add your own content.
- Facts: Regular License $59 on the product page when checked; last update 25 June 2026. View Eudaimonia · Live demo
Elms (Shtheme) – schools with student and instructor accounts
Elms describes course pages in grid and list styles and sign-in and sign-up for both students and instructors. Its preview also mentions BuddyPress and bbPress, which suits schools that want a community area.
- Good fit if: you need course listings plus student and instructor accounts in one design.
- Check before choosing: confirm which plugins power the LMS and community features and whether they are bundled or need separate licenses; ask the author before buying if the product page doesn’t answer it.
- Facts: Regular License $129; last update 9 July 2026; compatibility listed with Elementor and Contact Form 7. View Elms · Live demo
For an LMS-focused premium design
UDEMA (Shtheme) – built around selling courses
UDEMA’s product page describes it as an educational theme with learning management features, where you can sell courses and collect payments through online gateways.
- Good fit if: you want a design built around course sales from the start.
- Check before choosing: the product page lists Contact Form 7 and Bootstrap but not Elementor among compatible tools, so check the documentation for how pages are edited, and which LMS and payment components are included.
- Facts: Regular License $129; last update 9 July 2026. View UDEMA · Live demo
How to choose in practice
- Write down the three pages you can’t launch without (for example: course catalog, single course, checkout; or programs, staff, admissions).
- Pick the LMS first if you sell courses, then check that the theme’s demo already styles that LMS.
- Test on staging: install the theme, the LMS and one sample course before importing your full content.
- Check accessibility and mobile layouts; students often study on phones.
- Compare licenses and support; our guide to theme licenses explains Regular, Extended and free licenses.
