A free theme can carry a real business website, as long as you choose it for the right reasons. The good free themes differ less in looks than in how you build with them: some expect the block editor, some are designed around Elementor, some give you a ready-made industry demo and some give you a blank canvas.
This shortlist mixes seven well-known themes from the WordPress.org directory with five free themes from Shtheme. Disclosure: Shtheme publishes this blog, and the five Shtheme themes below are our products. We applied the same criteria to all twelve and listed limitations for each, including ours.
How we chose and compared
Every theme on this list:
- Costs nothing to download and use on a business site.
- Was updated within the last 12 months (one exception is flagged).
- Has a clear source you can download from and an identifiable author.
For each theme we checked the same points on its official page on 2 October 2026: who it suits, how you build with it (block editor or Elementor), the last update date, stated WordPress and PHP requirements, and what to check before you commit. We did not run speed tests, so this list contains no performance scores. Install counts are the figures shown on WordPress.org; Shtheme doesn’t publish install counts, so none are shown for our themes.
Two practical differences between the groups:
- WordPress.org themes update through your dashboard like plugins do.
- Shtheme free themes are downloaded from shthemes.net. They are built for Elementor and come with demo content for a specific type of business. Updates are downloaded from shthemes.net rather than delivered through the WordPress.org directory.

The shortlist
1. Kadence – a flexible starting point for most business sites
Kadence describes itself as a lightweight but full-featured theme with drag-and-drop header and footer builders and starter templates, and it mentions integrations for shop and course sites. It suits owners who want to build mostly with the block editor and still control the header and footer visually.
- Good fit if: you want one theme that can handle a brochure site now and a shop later.
- Check before choosing: which features are in the free theme and which need paid add-ons; plan your design around the free set.
- Facts: version 1.5.2, updated 24 July 2026, 500,000+ active installations, requires WordPress 6.3 and PHP 7.4 (WordPress.org).
2. Constol (Shtheme) – for consulting, finance and advisory firms
Constol is built for corporate service firms: its product page names financial advisors, accountants, consulting firms, insurance and investment companies. The theme comes with Elementor layouts and one-click demo import, so the fastest route is to import the demo and replace the content.
- Good fit if: your site is mostly services, team and credibility pages and you are comfortable editing in Elementor.
- Check before choosing: Elementor is required to edit the demo layouts; review which plugins the demo uses before installing on an existing site.
- Facts: free license ($0) with optional paid installation and support; last update 16 June 2026; the product page lists compatibility with Elementor, Contact Form 7 and WordPress versions up to 7.0. View Constol · Live demo
3. Astra – a lightweight base that works with almost any builder
Astra is one of the most installed themes in the directory and is often used as a neutral base for the block editor or page builders. It suits teams that already know which builder they want and need a theme that stays out of the way.
- Good fit if: you build sites for several clients and want the same base everywhere.
- Check before choosing: the theme itself is deliberately plain; expect to design pages yourself or start from a template library, and budget time for that.
- Facts: version 4.14.0, updated 24 September 2026, 1+ million active installations (WordPress.org).
4. Maxid (Shtheme) – for small agencies and service companies
Maxid is a business and agency theme with Elementor layouts, a one-click demo import and a Bootstrap 5 based front end. Its preview shows two home page variants, which is enough for an agency or a small service business that needs a clear homepage, services and contact pages.
- Good fit if: you need a straightforward agency site quickly and prefer editing visually.
- Check before choosing: the product description also mentions medical websites; judge the demo by your own content, not the label. Elementor is required.
- Facts: free license ($0); last update 16 June 2026; compatibility listed with Elementor, Contact Form 7 and WooCommerce. View Maxid · Live demo
5. GeneratePress – a minimal base for people who like to build
GeneratePress positions itself around speed and usability; its directory page says the theme adds less than 10 kB to your page size and supports the block editor and major page builders. It gives you very little design out of the box, which is the point.
- Good fit if: you or your developer prefer to build layouts with blocks and keep the theme minimal.
- Check before choosing: the directory version was last updated on 1 December 2025, the oldest date on this list. That isn’t a problem in itself for a mature theme, but check compatibility notes for the latest WordPress release.
- Facts: version 3.6.1, 500,000+ active installations, requires WordPress 6.5 and PHP 7.4 (WordPress.org).
6. Kvieera (Shtheme) – for IT services and software companies
Kvieera targets IT service providers, software companies and web design firms. Its listing highlights a dark version, which suits tech brands that want a darker interface without custom CSS.
- Good fit if: you sell technical services and need pages for services, process, case studies and team.
- Check before choosing: dark designs need careful contrast checks once you add your own colors and images.
- Facts: free license ($0); last update 16 July 2026; built for Elementor with demo import. View Kvieera · Live demo
7. Blocksy – block-editor first, with strong WooCommerce support
Blocksy focuses on speed and full block editor integration and highlights its WooCommerce features. It requires a recent WordPress version (6.7 or later), which signals that it follows core development closely.
- Good fit if: your business site includes a small shop and you want to stay with the block editor.
- Check before choosing: your site must run WordPress 6.7 or later; check which features need Blocksy’s companion plugin or its paid version.
- Facts: version 2.1.57, updated 11 September 2026, 300,000+ active installations (WordPress.org).
8. Logistick (Shtheme) – for logistics, courier and moving companies
Logistick is aimed at transport, cargo, courier, moving and warehouse businesses. According to its listing, it includes 16 homepage versions, which gives a logistics company plenty of starting points for different services or regions.
- Good fit if: you run a transport or delivery business and want an industry-specific design.
- Check before choosing: sixteen demos are useful for choosing a direction, but import only the one you need to keep the site lean.
- Facts: free license ($0); last update 16 September 2026, the most recent among our free themes; WooCommerce listed as compatible. View Logistick · Live demo
9. Neve – simple to start, open to builders later
Neve describes itself as a fast, lightweight theme compatible with page builders and WooCommerce. It suits a business that wants a clean site now with the option to add a builder later.
- Good fit if: you want something simple that won’t lock you into a builder.
- Check before choosing: compare the free customization options with what your design needs before you start building.
- Facts: version 4.2.14, updated 29 September 2026, 200,000+ active installations, requires WordPress 5.5 and PHP 7.0 (WordPress.org).
10. Twenty Twenty-Five – the no-plugin option
The current default WordPress theme is a block theme with patterns and style variations. Everything is edited in the Site Editor, with no theme options panel and no page builder.
- Good fit if: you want the fewest moving parts and are happy to design with blocks and patterns.
- Check before choosing: it is designed for flexible, editorial-style layouts; a services business may need extra patterns for things like pricing tables or team grids.
- Facts: version 1.5, updated 20 May 2026, 1+ million active installations, requires WordPress 6.7 (WordPress.org).
11. Hello Elementor – a blank canvas for Elementor users
Hello Elementor is a minimalist theme made by the Elementor team as a base for designing every part of the site in Elementor.
- Good fit if: you already design with Elementor and don’t want the theme to add any styling.
- Check before choosing: you get almost no design without Elementor; site-wide headers and footers are built with Elementor’s theme building tools, so check which Elementor plan includes what you need.
- Facts: version 3.5.1, updated 25 August 2026, 1+ million active installations, rated 4.2 out of 5 from 129 reviews (WordPress.org).
12. Garlant (Shtheme) – for landscaping and local service businesses
Garlant is designed for landscaping, lawn care, garden design and plant shops. Its listing mentions four homepage versions. Local service companies with similar needs (projects gallery, services, quote request) can adapt it beyond gardening.
- Good fit if: your business sells local services where photos of past work matter.
- Check before choosing: large project galleries need compressed images; plan image sizes before you upload.
- Facts: free license ($0); last update 16 July 2026; built for Elementor with demo import. View Garlant · Live demo
How to pick one in 15 minutes
- Decide how you will build. If you want to stay in the block editor, start with Kadence, Blocksy, GeneratePress or Twenty Twenty-Five. If you want to edit visually in Elementor, compare Hello Elementor with the Shtheme themes, which come with ready-made Elementor demos.
- Match the demo to your content, not your taste. Count the page types you need (services, team, case studies, quote form) and pick the demo that already has them.
- Check requirements against your hosting. WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or newer; any theme on this list should run on a current host.
- Look at the last update date before you install, and again before major WordPress updates.
- Know where updates come from. Directory themes update in the dashboard; themes from a vendor’s site update from that vendor.
Free and premium themes also differ in licensing and support. Our guide to WordPress theme licenses explains what “free”, “Regular” and “Extended” mean in practice. If you need a premium design instead, our Top 20 business and corporate themes list covers paid options.
